New Year Spice Cellar حافظة توابل السنة الهجرية الجديدة, 2026

This project emerges from a desire to engage with cultural traditions as living, evolving practices and to explore how design can support their continuity across generations. Rooted in my cultural heritage, the work focuses on the Hijri New Year as a moment of gathering, renewal, and shared ritual—an occasion where everyday objects take on symbolic meaning through use. In the Hijaz region of Saudi Arabia, the New Year is marked by the preparation and sharing of white almond coffee, a milky beverage that symbolizes hopes for abundance, joy, and a prosperous year ahead. Families come together to drink the coffee, often accompanied by an assortment of garnishes that are added according to personal taste. This ceremonial act transforms a simple moment of hospitality into a collective celebration, rich with cultural and emotional significance. To honor and sustain this tradition, I designed a set of spice cellars specifically intended to hold the garnishes served alongside the coffee. The forms are inspired by the intricate arabesque wood patterns found in historic Hijazi townhouses, translating architectural motifs into functional tabletop objects. Through material choice, ornamentation, and scale, the design draws a direct connection between domestic rituals and the built heritage of the region. By creating an object with a defined role within this ceremonial context, the work positions design as both a functional tool and a cultural vessel. Used annually and passed through generations, the object becomes part of the ritual itself—supporting the preservation of the Hijri New Year celebration and reinforcing the role of material culture in carrying traditions forward through everyday use. ينبع هذا المشروع من رغبة في التفاعل مع التقاليد الثقافية باعتبارها ممارسات حية ومتطورة، واستكشاف كيف يمكن للتصميم أن يدعم استمراريتها عبر الأجيال. يركز هذا العمل، المتجذر في تراثي الثقافي، على رأس السنة الهجرية كلحظة لتجمع العائلة والتجديد والطقوس المشتركة، وهي مناسبة تكتسب فيها الأشياء اليومية معنىً رمزيًا من خلال استخدامها. في منطقة الحجاز في المملكة العربية السعودية، يُحتفل برأس السنة الهجرية بتحضير وتقديم قهوة اللوز البيضاء، وهو مشروب حليبي يرمز إلى آمال الرزق والفرح والازدهار في العام الجديد. تجتمع العائلات لشرب القهوة، وغالبًا ما تُقدم معها مجموعة متنوعة من الإضافات كاللوز والدارسين التي تُضاف حسب الذوق الشخصي. يحوّل هذا الطقس الاحتفالي لحظة بسيطة من الضيافة إلى احتفال جماعي غني بالمعاني الثقافية والعاطفية. لتكريم هذه التقاليد والحفاظ عليها، صممتُ مجموعة من أوعية التوابل المصممة خصيصًا لحفظ الإضافات التي تُقدم مع القهوة. استُلهمت أشكالها من نقوش الرواشين الخشبية المعقدة الموجودة في بيوت الحجاز التاريخية، محوّلةً الزخارف المعمارية إلى قطع عملية تُستخدم على المائدة. من خلال اختيار المواد والزخرفة والحجم، يربط التصميم صلة مباشرة بين الطقوس المنزلية والتراث المعماري للمنطقة. من خلال ابتكار قطعة ذات دور محدد ضمن هذا السياق الاحتفالي، يُقدّم هذا التصميم كأداة عملية ووعاء ثقافي في آن واحد. تُستخدم هذه القطعة سنويًا وتنتقل عبر الأجيال، لتصبح جزءًا من الطقس نفسه، مما يدعم الحفاظ على احتفال رأس السنة الهجرية ويعزز دور الثقافة المادية في نقل التقاليد عبر الاستخدام اليومي.
