Saudi Arabia
Born in 1972 in the mountainous Al-Baha region in the southwest of Saudi Arabia, Saeed Gamhawi is a founding member of the Tasami Center for Visual Arts and a member of the House of Artists in Jeddah. After graduating from the Institute of Fine Arts in Riyadh in 1990, he spent two and a half decades teaching Arts in Jeddah Public Schools. His interest in the arts began from an early age, and he explored through his artistic practices several movements such as realism and then surrealism, and found in his immediate surroundings a material for observation and inspiration, which appeared in his conceptual works, which often depicted simple concepts and subjects which later developed to address the deeper concepts through which he searches in the facts, either ordinary or distorted, that lie at the heart of the cultural, religious and social scenes of his society while pointing out the importance of change by highlighting results. Gamhawi put an end to his professional career in education to devote himself to artistic practice by establishing Raseef Studio in Riyadh. He held a number of solo exhibitions, including his solo show at the House of Fine Artists in Jeddah in 1998 and his exhibition "A Day" at the Jeddah Atelier in 2002. He also participated in several local and international collective exhibitions in Saudi Arabia, Argentina, the United States, and various Arab and European countries. Notable showcases include Noor Al Riyadh in 2020, Misk Art Week in Riyadh in 2019, and Al Obour 21 and 39 in 2019 and 2016. His work was displayed at the Louvre Museum, among several other institutions in Europe, as part of the exhibition accompanying the Ambassador competition in 2006. Most recently, his art was showcased at the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial 2024 and at Sotheby's London as part of the Party exhibition 2024.
